Clinical effectiveness and the pace of change

Abstract

The history of changing clinical practice is littered with good intentions which have had minimal impact on practice. For example, despite the NHS-wide interest in evidence-based practice few initiatives exist which help organizations learn how to act on evidence. The King's Fund Promoting Action on Clinical Effectiveness (PACE) programme seeks to bridge this gap by demonstrating how evidence-based practice can be implemented, PACE, which is funded by the NHS Executive, has two main elements: Sixteen loca l pro jects working on clinical to pics which range from press ure sore management at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield, to the employment of a family support worker for people with schizophrenia in the Wirral. N ursing is a main component of many of these projects. A PACE network which supports individuals involved in work on clinical effectiveness. So far, a bout 400 people have jo in ed the network and over 150 have a ttended the informal discussion days which provide opportunities for members to share experiences and learn from one another; to pics include wound care, asthma and learning disabilities.
