Primary nursing is dynamic and its inception acts as a springboard for the advancement of practice. The philosophy of primary nursing is also dynamic and thus needs to be modified regularly in order that it may retain its usefulness as a true reflection of beliefs and working practice. The research described in this article relates to an attempt to formulate an updated philosophy of primary nursing in the Glenfield Nursing Development Unit, Leicester, a unit with 19 cardiology and three high dependency beds.
