Care study William, an 83-year old man, was admitted via the accident and emergency (A&E) department to an orthopaedic ward within the Mid-Staffordshire General Hospitals. The A&E nurse accompanying him said that he preferred to be called Bill. The reason for his admission was a fall at home, in which he had sustained a fractured neck of right femur which had been confirmed by X-ray. He had suffered pain while in the A&E department for which he was given Omnopon 20 mg. Stemetil 12.5 mg was given to counteract the nausea that is a potential side effect of Omnopon. On admission to the ward at 23.40, Bill was pain free. He was accompanied by a care assistant from the nursing home where he was currently residing.
