Cardiac rehabilitation reduces morbidity and mortality following cardiac events and interventions. It is a cost-effective but under-used treatment. Many patients who are invited to attend do not engage with or complete these programmes, therefore missing out on the resources available from multidisciplinary teams to improve their health and reduce their risk of further heart disease. Delivering cardiac rehabilitation in ways that are sensitive to the needs of people, irrespective of their age, gender, comorbidities, ethnicity or economic status, is essential. By building collaborative relationships with patients, respecting their autonomy and supporting their ability to make changes, it is possible to ensure that more patients are committed to achieving their cardiac rehabilitation goals by completing the programme.
