Peripherally-inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) are increasingly being used for a variety of the indications that previously required traditional central vascular access devices. They are a safe and cost-effective alternative. However, they do have potentially important associated complications. This review will cover indications for PICCs and insertion techniques, as well as the detection, prevention and management of complications associated with insertion and continued usage.
