Abstract

The San Basilio de Palenque Afrocolombian community holds social particularities that deserves a thorough study. On one hand it is one of the most traditional African communities in the country, being inhabited by direct descendants of former slaves that has international recognition and a long tradition of political and social resistance. On the other hand, the community directly suffered the political violence until the end of the last century. This paper presents the different protest processes that are present in San Basilio de Palenque, how these processes are directly linked to the idea of collective identity defended by the community, and how these processes are generated and defended in the midst of violence. For that purpose, social movements theory and cultural identity theories are used. Finally, a proposal to include these processes into the current peacebuilding moment in Colombia is presented.
