Zdrada i znamię. Brandysowskie korektury i koniektury Becketta

Abstract

THE SNAG AND THE STIGMA: BECKETT’S CORRECTIONS AND CONJECTURES BY KAZIMIERZ BRANDYS The article attempts to interpret the impact of Samuel Beckett’s writing on two works by Kazimierz Brandys: Sposob bycia [Way of Being] and Bardzo starzy oboje [A Very Old Couple] . Kazimierz Brandys himself inspired the critics to search for Beckett’s influence in these two short works as he signalled his antipathy to Beckett in his Miesiące [Months]. The Polish writer’s reading of Beckett is agonistic and affective. The revisionary analysis correlates with Harold Bloom’s anxiety of influence. What is central to Brandys’s criticism of Beckett is his defence of the modern subject. Brandys’s characters continuously correct their views inspired by visions mediated through Beckett’s works: of the individual, of human relationships and of the perception of time. Brandys’s anti-nihilistic discourse, standing in clear opposition to Beckett’s, gradually crystallizes into a distinct vision of subjectivity, which implies the formation of a firm authorial self, independent from his precursor.
