Abstract A new reference system for the densitometric measurement of bone mineral in vivo is proposed. A solution of ZnCl2 in water with the same effective atomic number as hydroxyapatite is described. The concentration is calculated from a modification of the equation of Spiers (1946) for determining Zeff of a chemical compound. The solution of ZnCl2 has been tested experimentally and used in practice to measure the hydroxyapatite content of compact bone and spongiosa in the index metacarpal. A simple method of obtaining two radiographs in projections perpendicular to each other is utilized.
