Abstract The decay of the activity of bright platinum electrodes activated by means both of electrolytic and chemical preoxidations have been studied under a hydrogen atmosphere. The life of the activity has been shown to depend upon the extent of the oxidation of the surface in the pretreatment. The structural change of surfare caused by the preoxidation appears to be responsibe for the enhanced activity.
