Abstract A mechanism of the Ludwig-Soret effect has been proposed and formulated after the recent theory of viscosity and diffusion. The important assumption therein adopted is that the reaction rate formula can be applied even in the systems which have a temperature gradient. Soret coefficient and thermal diffusion coefficient have been calculated theoretically and the coincidence of the calculated values with the observed has been shown quite satisfactory.
