Abstract A brief theoretical discussion of the average horizontal gravity gradient is presented. Application of the average horizontal gravity gradient in exploration eliminates the disadvantage of all datum planes by unifying the techniques applied in regular gravimeter work and torsion-balance surveys, thereby resulting in better interpretation. The suitable selection of substation distances in accordance with the geological or geophysical problems to be solved may diminish the effect of local density disturbances or fluctuations close to the surface.
