Morphological Features of the Membranous Labyrinth in Ménière‘s Disease

Abstract

Objectives:Vertigo, the sensation of motion without true motion, is secondary to lesions or dysfunction within vestibular systems. The aim of this study was to determine morphological features within the vestibular systems and cochlear duct in Ménière's disease.Methods:Three patients who were diagnosed with Ménière's disease were enrolled. Two cases were studied in attack and recovery period. One case was followed by pre‐attack, attack and recovery period. Axial temporal thin sectional computed tomography (CT) data were applied to create 3D volume rendering membranous images on the CT work station for post processing with the use of current software.Results:In attack period, the saccule, utricle and cochlear duct were enlarged in comparison with pre‐attack and recovery period. Also, we could see thickening changing features of ductus reuniens, saccular duct, and utricular duct during attack period.Conclusions:We can evaluate conditions of the membranous labyrinth in Ménière's disease. The pathological images showed enlarged shape of the end‐organs and cochlear duct. We can know conditions of the membranous labyrinth in Ménière's disease.
