In this study we have examined research pertaining to the influence of social support and social network on health. It appears that good social supports and a functional social network are important factors for the prevention and understanding of illness, and in the rehabilitation process. The knowledge that has been gathered from this research has relevance for both the field of nursing and for nursing education. In order to enhance our understanding, we are focusing on Richard Lazarus' stress- coping theory.
