Most mental hospitals have a high proportion of impulsive, impressionable, and often frankly prorniscuous youngsters-a very high risk group for out-ofwedlock pregnancies. Reliable information and assistance could do much to avert ‘the disaster to both mother and child that may follow an unwanted pregnancy. Immature and emotionally disturbed people are responsible for the more than 25,000 “battered children” seen in hospitals every year. Family-planning services may well constitute preventive psychiatry for such families. Those benefits, added to others of an emotional nature that are less explicit and tangible but nonetheless valuable, leave no doubt but that family-planning services belong in a mental hospital. They are among its most widely needed and far-reaching treatments. .
