This chapter is a reconstruction of the social structure of a megalithic tomb society in Korea's South Kyŏngsang province. It examines the archaeological record to track the socio-political level and attempt to determine whether tombs were associated with a complex social organization, chiefdom, or egalitarianism. The author's examination, concentrates on three major themes: (i) chronological problems relating to the Korean Bronze Age and megalithic tombs; (ii) general aspects of Korean megalithic tomb cultures; (iii) the social organization of megalithic tomb society. In order to address the third theme the author has conducted mortuary analysis, primarily based on artefact assemblages of grave goods and physical labour expenditures for the construction of megalithic tombs. Korean megalithic tombs are small when compared to European megalithic monuments. In Korea, some megalithic tombs do indicate a large labour investment. Keywords: European megalithic monuments; Korea; labour investment; megalithic tomb society; mortuary analysis; social structure
