Abstract

The memorials in Chile associated with the crimes of the civil-military dictatorship (1973-1990) are places of confrontation with collective identities and cultural meanings. In these places of remembrance, ideas about the past and the present are discussed, that is, interpretations (memories) of what happened and why it matters today, and attempts are made to promote a culture of human rights. This raises two fundamental questions: to what extent is an interculturality of memories intended in the sites, and how to materialize what is no longer there for interaction and dialogue between generations? This transdisciplinary and qualitative research at two memorial sites in Santiago, Chile -Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi and Estadio Nacional Memoria Nacional - uses interviews and a central and specific theoretical-conceptual framework to analyze the relationship between remembering and forgetting, their politicization in the different phases of memory construction, the role of language and culture, the rescue of democracy, and the intercultural conflicts in the reconstruction of the recent past.
