Mortalidad hospitalaria por ictus

Abstract

Segun datos de la Organizacion Mundial de la Salud (OMS) las enfermedades cerebrovasculares agudas o ictus representan la tercera causa de muerte en el mundo occidental, la primera causa de discapacidad fisica en las personas adultas y la segunda de demencia1. Anualmente 15 millones de personas en el mundo sufren un ictus; de estas, 5 millones mueren y otros 5 millones sufren una discapacidad permanente como consecuencia del ictus, lo cual repercute de forma muy significativa en las familias y la sociedad2. Alrededor de 59 millones de personas murieron en todo el mundo durante el ano 2007 y el ictus fue la causa de la muerte en el 10% y de un tercio de la mortalidad global producida por las enfermedades vasculares. Ademas, el ictus, por ser la causa mas importante de morbilidad y discapacidad a largo plazo en Europa, supone una tremenda carga economica. El ictus ocupa el segundo lugar en cuanto a carga de enfermedad en Europa y representa el 6,8% de los anos de vida ajustados a discapacidad (AVAD); la enfermedad de Alzheimer y otras demencias ocupan el quinto lugar (3%) y los accidentes de trafico, el septimo (2,5%)3. El ictus representa actualmente en Espana la segunda causa de muerte, despues de la cardiopatia isquemica. Segun datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE), las enfermedades cerebrovasculares agudas o ictus fueron, en 2006, la segunda causa de muerte en la poblacion espanola (32.887 casos en ambos sexos) y la primera causa de muerte en la mujer (19.038 casos)4. La distribucion del ictus como causa de muerte es variable entre las distintas comunidades autonomas; en algunas, como Galicia y Extremadura, es la primera causa de mortalidad en ambos sexos. De forma similar a lo que ocurre con la cardiopatia isquemica, en las enfermedades cerebrovasculares se observa un marcado Mortalidad hospitalaria por ictus
