The Relative Biological Effectiveness of Fast Neutrons for Intestinal Damage

Abstract

Abstract Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of fast neutrons from the Medical Research Council cyclotron are compared to 250 kVp x rays for intestinal damage. The RBE is higher at low doses and approaches a common value of 1.9 at neutron doses above 1,000 rads. This RBE curve for intestinal damage is compared with similar curves for skin damage, damage to growing cartilage, and damage to hematopoietic tissues. All curves show the same general relationship between RBE and dose but differ in absolute RBE value from tissue to tissue. Clearly, extrapolations of RBE value from one tissue to another are unjustifiable.
