Cardiac calcifications, and in particular mitral annulus calcifications, have evoked only minor interest in the past (3, 5, 10). It was not until the advent of cardiac surgery that the investigation and localization of these calcifications gained impetus. The following 14 cases, 11 discovered during the last three months and 3 collected previously, attest to the frequency of this type of cardiac calcification. Its clinical and pathologic consequences will be discussed. The average age in this series was seventy-eight years, the youngest patient being sixty-four and the oldest eighty-nine. All but 1 were women. In most series, the incidence of calcification of the mitral annulus is 2 to 4 times greater in women than men (6,7,9). In a recent clinicopathological study of autopsy material, however, the 14 cases examined were all female (6). This is of interest when compared to another series of 1,000 necropsies on unselected cadavers divided equally by sex. Mitral annulus calcification was discovered in 13.2 ...
