Afemoral artery compression device is described which is employed in percutaneous aortography after the needle or catheter is withdrawn. This apparatus can save about fifteen minutes of professional time per study but, of more importance, it reduces the incidence of recurrent bleeding caused by premature release of manual compression from the artery. This simple mechanism has been used in over 100 cases at the Philadelphia General Hospital, without one instance of significant hematoma formation after release of compression. No artery damage or formation of thrombosis was observed, and the patient experienced less pain with this procedure than was formerly the case. The device is nothing more than a simple clamp to apply controlled pressure to the upper thigh. It rests between a wooden base plate and a rigid steel strap which is free to move up and down on threaded steel rods. Variation in the location of the pressure contact point to suit individual patients is obtained by an off-center bend, and by inch-...
