In view of the recent work on the treatment of carcinoma of the prostate by estrogens on the one hand and by castration on the other, sometimes supplemented by irradiation of the suprarenals or the pituitary, the following report of 25 cases treated in the past ten years is presented. Fourteen of this number were proved by biopsy; in the remainder, diagnosis was based on clinical findings. In a paper presented before the American Urological Association in 1944, Alyea (1) pointed out that, while the good immediate results of castration or diethylstilbestrol in prostatic carcinoma are now established, certain questions remain to be answered: How long will the palliative effects persist? Will the patient live longer and in greater comfort? Are metastases delayed or prevented? Which is to be preferred, stilbestrol or orchiectomy, or a combination of the two?
