</script>The paper illustrates some mathematical problems that are motivated by molecular biological applications and the techniques that are used to address them. The context is that of detecting evolutionary relationship on the basis of molecular sequence data and of measuring its strength. The Stein–Chen method is shown to play a central role in the theoretical analysis of many of the procedures used in practice.
