Analytical expressions are derived for the level shifts in systems undergoing type II predissociation. It is shown that the shifts at energies above the curve crossing point may be expected to oscillate in sign, with an amplitude comparable to the line width. At energies below the crossing point the magnitude of the shift is predicted to be much larger than that of the level width, and the formula for the shift reduces to a semiclassical average, over the level in question, of either the perturbation V122(r)/[V1(r) − V2(r)] or the diabatic–adiabatic potential difference [Formula: see text] according to whether it is regarded as a shift from the level supported by the diabatic or the adiabatic potential function.
