The most recent comprehensive monograph of Medicago (K. A. Lesins and I. Lesins. 1979. Genus Medicago (Leguminosae). A taxogenetic study. Dr. W. Junk bv Publishers, The Hague.) narrowed the circumscriptions of M. blancheana (as M. bonarotiana) and M. rotata of the previous monograph (C. C. Heyn. 1963. The annual species of Medicago. Magnes Press, Jerusalem.) by interpreting the removed components as interspecific hybrids. The present study of the distribution and association of the same characters judged by both monographs to be taxonomically important in the complex supports Heyn's conclusions.
