Evidence is given for acceptance of Clavaria inaequalis Müller ex Fr. as a valid species, including description of a specimen from the herbarium of Fries. Four species of Clavaria (including C. californica Pet., sp. nov. and C. neonigrita Pet., sp. nov.) are described with spiny spores, and comments on their phylogenetic relationships are made. A discussion of the appropriateness of separation of Clavaria from Clavulinopsis is included with special reference to Clavaria longispora, Clavulinopsis appalachiensis, and Clavulinopsis corallino-rosacea. Clavaria americana Pet., sp. nov., is proposed.
