Abstract

We write in response to John Tulloch's research comment ‘What is the risk of tickborne disease to UK pets?’ ( VR , 5 May 2018, vol 182, pp 511-513). Tulloch, commenting on an original research article printed in the same issue – Be tick aware: when and where to check cats and dogs for ticks (p 514) – emphasises the requirement for further research into the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in domestic pets within the UK. We agree, but while Tulloch indicated only two tick-borne infections ( Babesia canis and Borrelia burgdoferi ) that can be acquired in the UK by pets and two that may be encountered …
