Diagnosis of Hepatozoon canis

Abstract

WE wish to share with our colleagues the details of a case of Hepatozoon canis in a two-year-old female spaniel imported from Cyprus two days before presentation at a UK veterinary practice. It had been neutered 10 days previously, and presented with dyspnoea, generalised pruritus and a mammary mass. Clinical examination revealed pyrexia (39.8°C), tachycardia (heart rate 120) and tachypnoea (respiratory rate 80), with increased respiratory effort. Mucus membranes were pale; capillary refill time was less than two seconds. The coat condition was poor, with focal areas of lichenification and crusting. A blood sample was submitted to Axiom Veterinary Laboratories.
