Sometimes figures are the best way to tell a story. When it comes to the veterinary workforce, they spell out a very simple reality – it has moved from a male dominated career to a female one. According to the latest figures from the RCVS, women currently make up 59 per cent of the profession. If you examine the figures by age, you see a significant gender shift. In the 26 to 30 year age group, women make up 74 per cent of the veterinary workforce. Women dominate in all younger age bands and it is only when you reach the middle age bracket that this trend starts to reverse.
