EUROPEAN foulbrood (EFB) is one of the most important bacterial diseases of honeybee larvae. The causative agent, Melissococcus plutonius , is a one genus-one species bacterium and had been thought to be remarkably homogeneous on the basis of morphological, physiological, immunological, and genetic studies (Bailey and Gibbs 1962, Allen and Ball 1993, Djordjevic and others 1999).
