WE are writing in response to Mike Davies' letter on the control of ‘off-label’ use of veterinary medicines ( VR , June 30, 2012, vol 170, p 680). This letter raises several important points on the evidence base of medications used in veterinary practice. However, in the final paragraph, the author says: ‘My opinion is that veterinarians in first-opinion practice should avoid using any medicine off-label because of uncertain efficacy and the potential risks to their patients …’. …
