
Abstract Identification of poor performance is in an integral part of government policy. The suggested approach for the identification of such problems, advocated by the General Medical Council, is that of appraisal. However, traditionally, there has been a reluctance to deal with poor performers, as all doctors have made mistakes and are usually only too ready to forgive and be non-critical of colleagues. The problems are widespread, and 6% of the senior hospital workforce in any 5-year period may have problems.
