The fascinating article by Marcia Stone on “Newly analyzed giant viruses suggest reconfigured tree of life” in the October issue of Microbe, p. 386, presents Pandoravirus salinus (“the salty”) and Pandoravirus dulcis (“the sweet”). These two viruses (N. Philippe et al., Science 341:281–286, 2013) together with Megavirus chilensis (D. Arslan et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 108:17486–17491, 2011), have the largest viral genomes known thus far.
