Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) contribute significantly to the global public health threat of antimicrobial resistance. OXA-48 and its variants are unique carbapenemases with low-level hydrolytic activity toward carbapenems but no intrinsic activity against expanded-spectrum cephalosporins.
