Abstract

H. Gobind Khorana was born in 1922 in Raipur, Punjab, India (now Pakistan). He trained as an organic chemist, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1968, together with Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg, "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis." In this essay, Khorana recounts the many turns his life and research took, from his origins in India via England and Switzerland, to Canada and the United States, and from organic chemistry to molecular biology and studies of the sensory system.
