All known species of the genera Bracteacoccus , Spongiochloris , and Dictyochloris , and some of the species of Neochloris and Spongiococcum are capable of growing heterotrophically in darkness in a glucose-salts medium. In contrast, all known species of Chlorococcum are obligate photoautotrophs. Possible relationships between these results and certain morphological characteristics are discussed.
