Both two-constant and three-parameter upper convected Maxwell-Oldroyd models of viscoelastic fluids are used in this analysis of spherical and cylindrical sink flows. For spherical sink flows the stresses rise rapidly initially and the stress levels attained are large but bounded, while for cylindrical sink flows the viscoelastic stresses are modest. Several consequences of the data are presented. The results are in qualitative agreement with the available experimental results for very dilute polymer solutions.
