This letter examines the behavior characteristics of the mechanical oscillator composed of a mass, spring, and dashpot. An equivalence of response is observed between an undamped oscillator subjected to a decaying sinusoidal forcing function and a damped oscillator subjected to a sinusoidal forcing function. This equivalency of response has potential use for estimating the presence of modal damping in shock excited structural systems as demonstrated by means of an example problem.
