Numerous methods for controlling the noise resulting from steel wheel/steel rail interaction on urban rail transit systems have been examined. For each technique, the acoustic performance, costs, and compatibility with transit operations have been summarized. Several innovative techniques are discussed and requirements for future work are presented. [Work supported by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration.]
