Animal Response to Sonic Boom

Abstract

Experiments and observations have been made to test the effects of sonic booms (real or simulated) on mink, horses, dairy and beef cattle, sheep, turkeys, pheasants, and chickens. Several of these tests were carried out under field conditions. Results of some of these trials are considered similar to the sensory effects of sonic booms on humans. In one controlled experiment, there were no adverse effects on the hatchability of chicken eggs exposed to sonic booms on each of the 21 days of incubation. In another experiment, three groups of mink exposed to simulated sonic booms showed only slight differences in total kit mortality, at 10 days of age, between boomed and control groups. A current field trial involving the effect of sonic boom startle on pregnant and whelping mink is discussed. Field observations of other species of domestic animals are presented. The need for fundamental research on physiological responses of animals to impulse noise patterns is emphasized. Following further analysis of data now available, additional facts may be needed on selected domestic and wild animals and marine life.
