An analog-computer simulation of the mechanical action of the basilar membrane has been performed which results in a closer approximation to the Békésy experimental data than is feasible by a numerical evaluation approach. Confirmation of the results of Flanagan pertaining to pitch perception has been obtained. The analog model has been utilized in testing several hypotheses concerning the phenomenon of the “residue” in hearing.
