The transmission of long single-frequency pulses of sound in the deep sound channel is described. Pulses of 2-sec duration and 778-Hz carrier frequency were transmitted for ranges up to 270 km in the area south of Bermuda. The measurements include the attenuation coefficient, transition range, and horizontal small-scale spatial variation. The transmission measurements were made to evaluate the feasibility of a freely drifting Swallow float able to signal for extended periods to land-based receiving stations.
