Color Coding Stereo Pairs For Non-Interlaced Displays

Abstract

We describe a method for coding color stereo pair images for display on non-interlaced displays. The display frame buffer has a single frame memory and a single output lookup table. Left and right views are coded together as one picture, such that a pixel in the main frame memory is an index into two colormaps. Switching between left and right views is accomplished by changing the color lookup table during each vertical retrace. The color stereo pair can then be viewed by the use of a polarized display with passive glasses. Such a coding scheme compares favorably with systems that use alternate picture lines for left and right views, or with systems that divide the single bitmap in half.
