Integration of stereo camera geometries

Abstract

One disadvantage of the lateral stereo model is that there always exists a set of image elements, in both images, for which there is no correspondence. Similarly, one disadvantage of the axial motion stereo model is that there always exists a set of image elements around the center of either image for which the absolute error in determining depth increases drastically as the distance between image element and image center decreases. However, the portion of the image which results in erroneous correspondences when utilizing one stereo geometry can be processed with no similar errors if the other stereo geometry is incorporated. Therefore, a stereoscopic system with no such disadvantages can be developed by integrating the two models. It is shown that this can be achieved without reducing the contents of the depicted scene. The zoom-based stereo camera model is also proposed as a possible replacement of the axial motion arrangement.
