API 570 is the widest and least specialized of the ICPs. Piping comes in many forms and sizes and there’s a lot of it; up to 20 000 km in some plants. The API 570 Effectivity List (see Chapter 3 of this book) includes publications that cover flanges, valves and other fittings that make up a piping system. The BoK has recently been widened to cover parts of API RP 576 Inspection of Pressure-Relieving Devices, aligning it with API 510. Owing to its wide applicability, API 570 is often the first ICP certificate attempted by candidates. The piping construction code, ASME B31.3, is easier to understand than ASME VIII-I for vessels and the back-up technical information in API RP 574 is less refinery-process specific than the equivalent for vessels, API RP 572, so it’s easier to understand without refinery experience.
