The theory of a method, based on thermodynamics, for determining the power loss in hydraulic components is described. An experimental investigation of the method has been carried out on a hydrostatic pump with encouraging results. The major advantages of the method are that the measurements are simple and that no knowledge of the rate of flow or the properties of the fluid is required because the system is calibrated almost simultaneously.
