Aided by nurses using the belief clarification approach to intervention, a group of 20 females participated in eight structured sessions that addressed their beliefs and attitudes about being overweight. One participant redefined her negative experience into a more positive and realistic one that included recognizing additional sources of stress that contributed to low self-esteem and negative body image. The overweight experience is discussed in terms of unrealistic expectations of dieting and weight loss.
