TO THE EDITOR: I would like to commend Dr. Levin et al. for their article in the July issue titled "Omeprazole improves peak expiratory flow rate and quality of life in asthmatics with gastroesophageal reflux"(1). Increasingly, it is being recognized that the ability of asthmatics to carry on their normal activities at school, work, and play and to sleep through the night may be more important measures of the effectiveness of a treatment than small, even if statistically significant, changes in pulmonary function. Their paper is the first, that I am aware of, to measure the impact of antireflux therapy on "quality of life" in asthma.
