SYNOPSIS A case of idiopathic dilatation of the left atrium in a 7 month old infant is described. The initial diagnosis was a mediastinal mass, and the correct diagnosis was made at thoracotomy. His course was characterised by atrial arrhythmias for 3 months, but subsequent course was benign and the left atrial dilatation regressed to normal size.
