Summary An intense and bizarre hyperpigmentation developed in 7 patients with contact allergy to the optical whitener Tinopal CH 3566. In 4 of the patients the pigmentation followed a contact dermatitis, but the other 3 patients had not observed any skin changes or itching prior to or during the development of the pigmentation. Biopsies showed damage to the cells of the basal layer (hydropic degeneration, localized or complete destruction) and incontinence of pigment.
