Re‐imagining Psycho‐oncology

Re‐imagining Psycho‐oncology

Abstract

In 1984, the late Dr. Jimmie C. Holland and colleagues established the International Psycho‐Oncology Society with the aim of promoting and fostering multidisciplinary communication in the subspecialty of psycho‐oncology. In 1998, the first gold standard psycho‐oncology text book was published (Holland, 1998), again led by Holland the founder of the field, and now in its third edition. These seminal events created enduring institutions and defined the field around two primary dimensions: the response of patients, families and health professionals to cancer and its treatment; and the psychological, social and behavioural factors that influence cancer prevention, detection and survival. In Re‐imagining Psycho‐oncology, we invited researchers and research‐practitioners to consider the boundaries of the discipline and provoke a new imagining of the field. Specifically, this Issue was offered as an opportunity to explore, describe or stimulate innovation in psycho‐oncology including new technologies, methodologies, novel targets and theoretical approaches.
